Entering this room, visitors are immediately attracted to the large display case on the right which is used to preserve an important part of our common history: the period of emigration. This period, which was both sad and exciting at the same time, is represented by letters to loved ones, and photographs of nostalgic smiles longing for a distant home. Many documents and photographs are proof that our relatives “made it” in their adoptive countries and, in some cases, their successes carried them to elevated positions in society, reflecting credit on the nation of Italy.
The huge flag of the “S.M.S.Lombarda”, the Lombarda Society, of Detroit-Michigan dominates the back wall of the room. This flag has the Sabaudo crest embroidered on one side and the Visconteo snake on the other. The pennants and articles of the organization refer to the “Società di Mutuo Soccorso” or Lombarda Society for Mutual Aid (in dialect: “a Lumbarda.”) This organization, which later operated as a social club, was a place of refuge for those who, finding themselves alone in a foreign country, found support among its members.
On the wall opposite the large display case we find documents pertaining to our region such as the fully restored ancient cadastral map of Cuggiono which dates back to the 17th century. The official Cuggiono crest incorporates the symbols of three historically important families: the Crivelli family sieve, the Clerici family columns, and the Piantinida family tree.
Receipts for barge loads of cargo, dated 1782, testify to a thriving transportation system on the waters of the Naviglio Grande. Documents related to legal proceedings of the Royal Magistrate’s Court in Cuggiono are evidence of Cuggiono’s leading role in the region at the end of the 18th century.
One of the most valuable displays in the Museum is the collection of coins which includes a variety ranging from a dracma coin, dated 200 B.C., to Lira coins which were in common use just prior to introduction of the Euro.
