The Shoemaker and the Sabot Maker

Room audio presentation ( Click on the play arrow to start the presentation )
Work tools of the craftsmen are displayed in this small room. In the 1800's shoemakers were among the first to be employed in a craft not directly associated with the predominantly agrarian society. The large number of shoe making shops that thrived in Cuggiono during this period is an indication of their success. High quality exports brought recognition to the village and provided much needed financial support during those difficult times. The shape of their tools and the configuration of their equipment is sometimes difficult to understand, but it’s also an indication of the technical skill they possessed. Their ability to acquire those skills without the benefit of a formal apprenticeship program is even more impressive. There is considerable interest in the history of the wooden soled shoes common in this region. On display are the blades - similar to spoke shaves - used to form the soles, or sabots. These small wooden pins were used as nails.
