Room E - Weights and Measures

Room audio presentation ( Click on the play arrow to start the presentation )
Items exhibited in this room trace stages along the path to standardization of measurements. Prior to the time of the French revolution, every city, even those within the same country, had its own system of weights and measures. As transportation improved, this patchwork system became an impediment to free trade. In 1791, a new unit of measure, the meter, was proposed. Adoption of the meter and the metric system progressed through the 19th century until it became the standard for most world economies. The metric system was adopted by law in Italy in 1875, but many rural villages continued to use the ancient systems of weights and measures that they had always known. In this context, some of the items in this room such as the “trabucco”, the “stai”, and other ounce-based standards continued to play an important role for many years. Visitors will find unusual items such as a tool used to measure the height of horses, the platform scales, and the jeweler’s measure, to be of particular interest.
