Room F - The Clockmaker, the Goldsmith, and the Printer

Room audio presentation ( Click on the play arrow to start the presentation )
In this room a continuous noise draws the visitor’s attention: it is the ticking of the clock mechanism that was once installed in the bell tower of Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo in Castelletto di Cuggiono. A display case contains clockworks of different styles and periods, along with tools used by clockmakers and goldsmiths. Of special interest is a very old clockwork with its wooden mechanism and its small cogs made of oak. This clockwork was once a bell tower clock and is even older than the examples in the display case. The large and unwieldy printing press reminds us of an earlier period when typesetting for a project as simple as the posters displayed on the wall here was a major undertaking. Individual characters, carved from blocks of wood, were used to create the document. Some of those characters are located in the display case.
