When we tell our story, we cannot ignore the effect of war, despotism, and violent death on our society. Of that we find ample evidence in this room. One of the most valuable possessions of the Museum is the original Garibaldinian uniform which belonged to Sr. Paolo Scotti. Paolo Scotti was an important Cuggiono citizen who left an indelible mark on the public life of our village. Weapons of the National Guard are displayed in the case near the entrance to the room as are relics from the Battle of Magenta which occurred on June 4th, 1859. The next display case is dedicated to those who fought as partisans. Included in the display are photographs of Cuggiono citizens who were executed. This is a sad reminder of that tragic period of our history. This room also contains numerous relics from World War I including the bicycle used by Bersagliere Lieutenant Carlo Borghi. A simple, but effective means of improving mobility, Lieutenant Borghi’s troops used their bicycles to great effect in a surprise attack against Austrian forces deployed on the border along the Pulsar River on May 24th, 1915. All of our visitors wonder why a small rotating cage drum, similar to the type used in lotteries, is located in this room. Two documents dated 1887 provide an explanation: all potential conscripts had to present themselves to participate in a type of military lottery. Each individual was assigned a number and the numbered balls were drawn in a sequence which determined who would be required to enter military service and what the duration of their commitment would be. Of special interest is the collection of weapons; some dating from the early 1800's and some as recent as World War II. Flint lock rifles, revolvers, powder bottles, swords, and bayonets, are displayed in the cases. A variety of photographs help illustrate the difficulties our ancestors experienced during those turbulent times when wars were fought both at home, and abroad.
